No permits or passes are required for car touring and dispersed camping in Bears Ears National Monument. Vehicles and bicycles must stay on open designated roads and visitors must use established campsites and avoid impacting undisturbed areas. From the trailhead, follow the obvious trail north.

Moon House, a multi-room cliff dwelling named for its celestial pictograph, is an exceptional archaeological site in McCloyd Canyon on Cedar Mesa, Utah. The Bureau of Land Management requires a day use permit to visit Moon House and limits access to 20 people per day. Remember, it is illegal to remove any artifacts or damage sites in any way. Fines or jail time can result for those who break the law. Leave all artifacts where you find them, don't lean on walls or enter interior rooms, avoid touching rock art, and don’t add modern graffiti.

Stay left of a pouroff, and you soon reach a route that ascends the left canyon wall. Climb to the next tier of slickrock, where several cairns lead you higher. The final push involves climbing up a crack to the base of an overhung ledge around 1.7 miles. Reservations on this site are available for non-commercial hiking only.

In order to reach the Moon House Ruins, you’ll need to reach the trailhead. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, you’ll need to pick up your permit at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station before you visit.

Her mission is to get you out on your greatest adventure. Look for cairns and follow the path of least resistance. As one of the best hikes in Utah (in my opinion), navigating the permit system is worth it for this one.

You can’t ignore what is impossible to repress. From Moonhouse, stay at that level, and follow social trails up the canyon to a small ruin and a kiva. There are more small ruins up the canyon, but many will be stopped by a couple of small dryfalls before then. Grumbling about the permit system aside, I was very surprised to visit Thanksgiving weekend 2014 and not see anyone else the entire day.

You’ll need to scramble over a few bits (you’ll be using your hands) but it isn’t anything too precarious. Unlike other sites located in Cedar Mesa, the Moon House had shockingly little potsherds – or pieces of pottery. These are frequently found on the ground near ruins. This leads me to believe that the site has had its fair share of robbers and pick-pockets. Don’t climb the walls or enter any structures that you would have to touch to get in. From the junction of UT 95 and UT 261, drive south on UT 261 for about 4 miles.
If you’re looking for a stunning desert hike to an exceptional historic site, look no further than the Moon House Ruins. As one of the easier and larger Anscesteral Puebloan sites in the Cedar Mesa Region, the Moon House is a must-see. The Acquisition is subject to a number of conditions precedent, including receipt of all corporate and regulatory approvals (including the approval of the TSX Venture Exchange), and obtaining clearance under the Investment Canada Act.
Rising at 4 degrees of Scorpio, the full Pink Moon in Scorpio is bound to bring up uncomfortable truths. Scorpio is a sign that can see in the dark, and even when the facts aren’t being presented, this fixed water sign can always see what others are not seeing. This full moon will also square off with Pluto in Aquarius, and because Pluto is the planet of creation and destruction, it may encourage you to tear something down for the sake of rebuilding it with more strength, authenticity, and reinforcement.
It is estimated to have been constructed about 800 years ago, with a unique design. The ruins namesake room, Moon House, is a room with the moon painted on opposite walls. Access is easy via a relatively short, but stunning hike. The trail descends from the mesa, crosses the canyon, and visits Moon House proper, as well as several other ruins, granaries, and a kiva in the area. Moon House Ruin is one not to be missed in my opinion. Continue heading south on UT 261 for another 6 miles until you reach Snow Flat Road.
Hiking to Moon House is a rugged experience from start to finish. The road out to Moon House is rough; high-clearance and four-wheel drive are suggested, but the drive can be completed by two-wheel drive vehicles depending on conditions. The trail itself can be challenging for inexperienced hikers. There is a five-foot pouroff halfway to the archeological site which is impassable for some visitors depending on their comfort levels and prior experiences. See our Moon House Guide to determine whether or not a trip to Moon House is suitable for your vehicle and companions. Stop at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station (open seasonally) to check conditions before you hike.
Stay to the left of the obvious pour-off and you’ll spot a trail heading up the other side of the canyon. The Moon House is a large cliff dwelling located in the Cedar Mesa area of Bears Ears National Monument. It’s one of the largest cliff dwellings that’s still around in Cedar Mesa. The consensus is around 25 to 35 people called this place home at one time. These risk factors should not be construed as exhaustive. Readers are cautioned that events or circumstances could cause results to differ materially from those predicted, forecasted or projected.
Directly across from the site, the trail drops down to the bottom of the canyon. After a few broad switchbacks, the trail descends a steep scree slope and spits you onto the canyon floor at 1.6 miles. Ascend the trail, picking your way through a tier of slickrock. You’ll need to climb up a slabby crack to the base of the Moon House before you reach your final destination. You will want to pack out all trash, including human waste. This means bringing a WAG bag for number 2’s.
